Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product with lots of power Best trimmer I've ever owned. Starts right up every time. Before I purchased this trimmer I read the reviews. I was very hesitant about this buying this trimmer because of the bad reviews about the line not advancing. I would have to agree in the beginning until I spoke with my local dealer. Unlike other trimmers I've owned where you rev the motor and then bump the head, this is not the proper procedure with this one. The right way of doing it is to run the motor about three quarter throttle and bump the head while still running the motor at power. Its when you let off the throttle as your bumping the head will cause the line to tangle inside the head. As long as the engine is at speed it will work every time. No complaints here. Great trimmer.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worked decent...for 15 minutes. Bought the FS50 thinking it was a decent deal. First time out, it made a loud snap while using it. But it never stopped working. 2nd time out, loud snap again, but now something has come loose and sound like it's hitting the flywheel. Shut it off, and you can shake it and hear something rattling around. It's also very loud. I have maybe 15 minutes of runtime on this unit, and now it's already in for service. I'm thinking about getting what I can out of it on Craigslist and going back to my usual brand. This was my first Stihl product, and I'm not impressed. So now I don't have a trimmer for who knows how long.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from NO, NO, NO, NO, NO!!!!! WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT!!! This is my 4th Stihl FS40/50 series trimmer, and it is my LAST!! I do a lot of weedeating around my home, and Stihls have always held up very well (this is my 4th in about 25 years - the last one still runs well, just decided to leave it to our cabin and buy new). First up is an absolutely deplorable bump head. The bump "button" extends down so far that it is impossible to cut close, and every little uneven spot on the ground sends it bouncing upward. Maybe I should have seen this coming. When I purchased a replacement head for my last one they had redesigned it similar to this one. I got so fed up with that replacement head that I removed the bump button and advanced the line manually. Now they have managed to come up with an even worse design that makes it impossible to remove the button. Secondly, this thing is LOUD! Granted, none of the earlier versions were quiet, but this is the first time that I have felt that ear protection is an absolute must! Third is really nothing new - it still comes with a flimsy and frustrating grass guard that flops around and catches on any heavy grass. I modified the last ones - guess I will modify this one, too. :-( And lastly: Stihl, why not provide these trimmers with a J-handle like you used to? I have kept the J-handle from my first one and mounted it on all subsequent trimmers that I purchased. Even made one out of conduit for my cabin trimmer.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Comes with junk line The trimmer line it comes with is junk. Had to take apart head 4 times to use it 15 minutes. Line kept breaking off inside head. Why would you put such junk line an a great trimmer? It makes one think they made a mistake buying it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Wouldn’t recommend Very happy with this product at first. Has plenty of power. Began having problems with it when it was a year old. I only used it for light trimming around the yard and some high grass occasionally. It acted like the clutch in it was slipping at first every now and then. Usually shut it off and restart and it was fine. Then the head would just free wheel and wouldn’t engage with the shaft. Took it in and got it “fixed” last fall. Used the first time this spring for 10 mins fine. The second time I pulled it out nothing. Got it to engage once and no more. Out of warranty now so I’m debating on buying a different brand. Not what I expected from a stihl!!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Stihl weed eater fs50ce I hate this thing. Used twice and going to put it up for sale. First had trouble out of bump feed. Then bought a duracraft 5-C. Not happy with it neither, hit a fence wire just comes out to nothing . Would never buy a Stihl product. Thanks,Sam

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I wouldn't buy Had problems with the line feed since day one. Took it back to my dealer and they said we have that problem alot and suggested another head. Bought the new self winding head and can't get that to work either. I have been using trimmers for over 40 years and never had such a problem. Very disappointed in my trimmer and have been thinking about putting it on Craigslist and take a loss and buy a cheap trimmer that works!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice power, line feed needs work I have about an acre of land in my backyard which is wild lands and needs frequent weed cutting to reduce fire danger in the summer. The FS-50 has good power and goes through the weeds fast enough. It starts up easy and so far has held up well (about 3 months old). New line replacement is a breeze. My only complaint is about the co-called automatic bump feed for the cutting line. It doesn't work. 90% of the time when I bump it nothing happens. The mechanism is usually stuck so I have to press the bump in by hand and manually pull out the line. This slows my work efficiency considerably. I hope future models has a more robust and well working auto line feed. This is not German engineering at its finest.
